More choice for Tewkesbury visitors as eight new businesses open up in the town

Tewkesbury is the place to be - that's the message coming from businesses, as eight new businesses set up shop in the town.

In recent weeks a ladies’ fashion store, a care agency, a home ware shop and a hair salon have all set up shop in the town centre and a number of new ones are due to open in coming weeks, including an Italian restaurant in the high street.

The new businesses will help to increase the vibrancy of the town centre, and give residents and visitors even more choice.

The new additions to the town have resulted in a 50 per cent fall in the number of empty shop units - with Tewkesbury Borough Council working hard with local agents to promote the remaining ones.

Alongside the council’s work, the Tewkesbury town team is also working hard to enhance the vibrancy of the centre, promoting it as a place to visit by both residents and visitors, and helping establish a range of new events and encourage investment  in the Tewkesbury.

The town team was set up following £10k of government funding as part of the national Mary Portas Town Team Initiative, aimed at improving high streets and town centres.

Tewkesbury Borough Council's Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion Cllr Dave Waters said: "This is fantastic news for the town and it just goes to show that Tewkesbury is a popular place to invest in. We have been working closely with local agents to promote vacant units and advise on any available rate relief, and I'm pleased to say that this approach is working. The Tewkesbury Town Team is working really hard to bring more vitality to the town, through things such as the monthly farmers’ market, and we are now looking forward to building on our partnership with the town council to make sure that Tewkesbury continues to thrive as a town centre."

Lyn Pearce has just opened Indika, a ladies’ fashion shop, on the High Street. Lyn first visited Tewkesbury during the Medieval Festival, and was immediately attracted to the town. Lyn said: “I am delighted to have set up  my shop in Tewkesbury – the town is just so full of character. Tewkesbury just seems to have it all, everyone has been extraordinarily friendly and I am looking forward to growing my business here.”
