Summary

The A419 Corridor, which runs through Stonehouse and connects Stroud with the M5, has been redeveloped and upgraded for the benefit of all road users.

What is the A419 Corridor project?

The A419 Corridor is an important main road through Gloucestershire, comprising multiple roundabouts and entry points, as well as forming part of the National Cycle Route. It runs alongside the village of Stonehouse, and is an important commuter route for those living in the Stroud area, to connect to the M5.

The corridor was in need of improvement to support the increased (and future) demand of traffic in the area, and the following changes were made:

- Chipmans Platt Roundabout: the east/westbound entries and exits were widened to two lanes. New off carriageway shared use cycle designation was installed between Spring Hill Road and Grove Lane; and improvements to lighting, signing, and lining was made throughout.

- Oldends Lane Roundabout: the approach was widened to two lanes, and a new toucan crossing was added. The roundabout geometry was improved, along with signing and lining.

- Horsetrough Roundabout: a new left-turn lane was installed from the Ebley Bypass to Bristol Road, along with the widening of A419 eastbound to two lanes. Off carriageway cycle routes around the roundabout perimeter were installed.

- Downtown Road Signals: the A419 westbound exit was widened to two lanes, traffic signals were upgraded, and the pedestrian crossing expanded to include a toucan crossing for the National Cycle Route.

- Carriageway: between Horsetrough Roundabout and Downton Road Signals, the westbound carriageway has been expanded to two lanes.

Who benefits from this project?

Motorists and cyclists are the primary beneficiary of this project, as the increased capacity not only reduces congestion and journey time, but also safety during journeys. Commuters accessing the surrounding areas and routes at rush hour will particularly appreciate the widening of lanes, and cyclists following the National Cycle Route will enjoy a much safer and enjoyable experience crossing this section.

Local residents around the A419 will also benefit from a more free flow of traffic, with less congestion and idling cars stuck in traffic.

What stage is the project currently at?

Construction began in Spring 2019 and completed in Autumn 2020. The A419 is now fully redeveloped and open for traffic throughflow.

Why is the project important to Gloucestershire and the local community?

With such an important motorway link for accessing the Stroud Valleys, the A419 is an important tourism route for those visiting the Cotswolds, Minchinhampton Common, Rodborough Common, and Stroud. Reduced journey times will help keep this important economy flowing.

The creation of new jobs at other GFirst LEP-funded projects across Gloucestershire also means a greater likelihood of inter-county commuting, of which anybody coming to or from Stroud would likely utilise the A419 corridor. Greater accessibility and freedom of movement will benefit the overall county economy.

What are the final results of the project?

The completed project has delivered improvements to all three roundabouts, signals, and carriageways along the corridor. Capacity (lanes) has doubled across most areas, and congestion has been reduced along the main route.
