A million new reasons to cycle and walk around Lydney

The county council’s cabinet will be asked next week to give the go ahead to find the contractors to deliver £1m pounds of improvements to paths in the Lydney area.

Earlier this month the council successfully  secured £1m of funding from GFirst LEP to invest in some of the pathways which link this beautiful area of the county. The project will create a pleasant, safe and accessible network of pathways linking together Lydney town centre, Aylburton, the railway station, Dean Academy, and the local residential areas.

The aim is to reduce car journeys and cut congestion in the town contributing to a greener, healthier Forest of Dean.

These improvements will boost the local economy offering greener travel choices that will make it easier for both residents and visitors to access jobs, services, education, shopping and visitor attractions.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for environment and planning said “Upgrading the off-road walking and cycling links around the town and its surrounds will improve safety for walkers and cyclists and encourage more active travel.”

Councillor Alan Preest local county councillor for Lydney said, “I’m delighted to see this investment in our town and the surrounding area which will benefit both local residents and visitors to the area and boost the local economy.”

Once the contractor is in place it is expected that work to upgrade the paths will begin in the Spring next year with the scheme complete and open to the public in the Autumn of 2019.
