Boosting business skills: ILM qualification opens doors for students

Twenty-four students have completed their Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 2 award in Leadership and Team Skills alongside studying for their Sports Business Management Honours and Foundation degrees, with some scoring more than 80%.

ILM professional trainer Stephen Whitbourn  and Principal Lecturer Gill Reindl worked together to embed the qualification within a newly developed Personal and Management Development module on the Sports Business Management programme.

“Achieving this industry-recognised qualification will give a real boost to these students’ CVs and give them an edge when they apply for jobs,” said Gill Reindl.

“We piloted the scheme in 2012 with seven students completing the qualification and it was really well received, so we decided to open up the opportunity to a wider group. It’s a challenging course and really stretches the students but the qualification and skills they gain enhance employability and their personal development.”

To achieve the ILM award, students completed three assignments – ‘leading your work team’, ‘workplace communication and ‘developing yourself as a team leader’ – and the content was explored using a combination of lectures and interactive workshop activities.

ILM is the UK’s leading provider of accredited vocational management, leadership and coaching qualifications recognised throughout the private and public sector.
